Abstract

In the post-Cold War era, the US-led unipolar system took the country's political relations with China to a new stage. The Tiananmen Square events in 1989 weakened diplomatic relations between the two countries, China no longer has the important position for the United States that it had during the Cold War when it was used to balance power against the Soviets, so it is better to pay attention to human rights and minorities in China. China was trying to normalize relations with the United States because it did not want to be politically marginalized, which would eventually harm its economic growth. China has an important political, economic, geographical, and military position, the Americans quickly realized this importance, so relations were normalized in the mid-1990s, and several agreements were signed between the two sides. The United States opened the door to China's membership in the World Trade Organization in 2002, and China grew rapidly to become the world's second-largest economy after the United States, while in the 1990s it was the world's seventh largest. The events of 9/11 led to greater coordination and bilateral cooperation. China was initially against the war in Iraq, but the US preoccupation with the wars in the Middle East brought China further and strengthened its economic and diplomatic hegemony. In 2011, Barack Obama made China the focus of US foreign policy doctrine and implemented a pivot to Asia policy.
